Ventilation Against Smog in Almaty: What to Install at Home and in the Office

Should You Open the Windows During Smog in Almaty? Alternatives to Natural Ventilation

Published

When outdoor air is polluted, an open window lets the same dust and fine particles into the room. So how you ventilate during smog depends on current air quality, not the time of day. If outdoor air gets cleaner, ventilate. If smog levels rise, keep the windows closed.

Should you open windows during smog?

When pollution levels are high, keep windows and balcony doors closed. Dust can still enter through gaps, but an open window greatly increases the amount of outdoor air coming in. Do not rely on smell or visibility alone: fine particles may be hard to notice. The US EPA also recommends closing windows when outdoor pollution is high and using suitable indoor filtration (guidance on particulate matter).

Check current air-quality readings. Conditions in Almaty can change during the day, so there is no fixed “clean hour” for ventilation. When outdoor air quality improves, air out the room naturally if temperature and comfort allow.

Alternatives to open windows

A supply ventilation system can bring in outdoor air without opening windows. It passes incoming air through filters. During smog, filtration of fine particles matters. Check the filter class and compatibility in the unit manual: the filter needs to capture pollutants without restricting the airflow the system is designed to deliver.

A portable air purifier works differently. It filters air already inside the room, but does not bring in fresh outdoor air. A standard split air conditioner usually cools and circulates indoor air rather than ventilating the room.

Air cleaning and ventilation solve different problems. If you do not have a supply system, a purifier can reduce the amount of airborne particles in a room. Ventilate when outdoor air is cleaner, and reduce indoor pollution sources where possible, such as cigarette smoke, candles and strong aerosols.

What happens if you do not ventilate for a long time?

Closed windows limit outdoor dust, but they do not replace air exchange. Carbon dioxide, moisture, odours and pollutants from cooking and cleaning can build up indoors. During prolonged smog, an apartment in Almaty needs a properly sized ventilation system, not just closed windows.

A carbon dioxide monitor can help show whether there is enough air exchange while people are in the room. It does not measure smog or fine dust. To monitor particles, use a separate PM2.5 sensor.

Supply ventilation for apartments and offices

For an apartment or small office, consider the Turkov I-VENT 500. The product listing rates it for spaces from 55 to 135 m², with airflow up to 400 m³/h and four filtration stages. The listing also includes a heater, automation and Wi-Fi control. It states a purification rate of up to 99.95%; ask the seller which particles and test conditions that figure refers to.

For a larger space, consider the Turkov I-VENT 1000, rated for up to 650 m³/h and spaces from 110 to 335 m². Choose a unit based on an airflow calculation, occupancy and floor plan.

For office ventilation in Almaty, the Klimor EVO-H modular unit is another option. Its listing gives a capacity of up to 5,000 m³/h and filter options including G4, F7 and carbon. The actual setup depends on the project. A carbon filter helps with some gaseous pollutants and odours, but it does not replace a particle filter.

Using the system on smoggy days

  1. Check outdoor air-quality readings before opening windows.
  2. If the unit is designed for fine-particle filters, replace them on the manufacturer’s schedule.
  3. Do not remove filters to increase airflow; check whether the system is sized for the space.
  4. Use the range hood while cooking. Ventilate afterwards when outdoor air allows.
  5. In an office, monitor air exchange and particle levels separately; one reading does not replace the other.

Choose supply ventilation in Almaty by floor area, room use and filtration needs. Ask for an airflow calculation and confirmation that the selected filters are compatible with the unit.
