Ventilation Against Smog in Almaty: What to Install at Home and in the Office

Published · updated

Even with the windows closed, street dust can enter through gaps and whenever you ventilate. An air conditioner cools indoor air and usually recirculates it. Filtered supply ventilation brings fresh outdoor air inside.

Why an air conditioner is not enough

A standard split system does not bring fresh air in from outside. Exhaust ventilation without a planned air supply can pull air through gaps around windows and doors. For cleaner air in an Almaty apartment, consider a supply ventilation system.

A supply unit draws in outdoor air and passes it through filters. In winter, it heats the incoming air. Check the equipment manual for the filter type and replacement interval.

How filters capture smog particles

Urban air contains particles of different sizes. PM2.5 refers to airborne particles up to 2.5 micrometres in diameter. A pre-filter catches larger dust particles. A finer layer of fibres captures smaller particles.

Air flows between the fibres. Particles collide with them and remain in the filter material. A filter is not a simple sieve with holes of one size: its performance depends on the material and airflow.

The filter should fit tightly against its frame. If air slips around the cartridge through a gap, that part of the airflow remains unfiltered. A filter that is too restrictive can also reduce airflow if the fan is not designed for it. Check the filter class and size specified for the unit.

The fibrous layer captures dust particles. Activated carbon helps reduce some gaseous pollutants and odours.

What a carbon filter does

A mechanical fibre filter captures dust and airborne particles. A carbon layer holds some molecules from certain gases and odours. As its pores fill, the filter becomes less effective. Replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A carbon filter does not replace a particle filter.

Supply ventilation for an apartment

For an apartment or small house, consider the Turkov I-VENT 500 supply unit. It is designed for spaces from 55 to 135 m² and supplies up to 400 m³/h. It has four filtration stages. The product listing also specifies air purification up to 99.95%, an electric heater, an airtight damper, automation and Wi-Fi control.

For a larger space, consider the Turkov I-VENT 1000. It is rated for areas from 110 to 335 m² and airflow up to 650 m³/h. Choose a unit based on an airflow calculation, not floor area alone.

Cleaner air in the office

Office ventilation depends on floor area, the number of employees and working hours. The catalogue includes the Klimor EVO-H modular air handling unit, with capacity up to 5,000 m³/h. Available filters include G4, F7 and carbon filters. A heat recovery unit can be added if needed.

If outdoor air carries sand and coarse dust, a TROX WSL sand trap louvre can be installed at the air intake. It catches larger particles but does not replace fine filters.

What to check before ordering

  • Match airflow to the floor area and number of occupants.
  • Choose suitable filtration for fine dust; add a carbon filter for some odours.
  • Check how the unit heats incoming air in winter.
  • Follow the manual for filter inspection and replacement.
  • Have the system installed and adjusted so air reaches every room.

Browse the cpk.kz ventilation equipment catalogue to find a system for an apartment, house or office. The team can help calculate airflow and choose the right filtration for the space.
